That One Night: Live in Buenos Aires

Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? Remember when the often tumultuous realm best known as the Heavy Metal genre was more or less pnwed by ‘…the Big Four…’? Confused? Please…allows me to elaborate. For those of you not old enough to remember, the Big Four were none other than Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer. Once upon a time, this unholy foursome ruled the various scenes with the proverbial iron hand, often exuding an overwhelming sense of dominance over their less successful brethren. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and each of the groups eventually fell from public favor (have you been paying attention to the disgusting, ridiculously overwrought soap operas that has become Metallica and Anthrax?) leaving many to question if a return to glory was even feasible, let alone practical or realistic.

Thankfully for all parties involved, not only has Megadeth remained refreshingly relevant, they have once again returned with yet another release of bone crushing proportions.

On the brilliant That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires (2007), an expertly captured eighteen song collection of blistering concert footage (taken from the group’s October 9, 2005 show at Obras Sanitarias stadium), each track, beginning with the thunderous “Blackmail The Universe”, the emotion-laden “In my Darkest Hour”, and the recently re-recorded “A Tout Le Monde”, immediately goes for the throat, engulfing both the feeble and able-bodied alike amid a virtual sonic tidal wave of quasi-epic proportions. Easily overpowering one’s unsuspecting senses with a dangerously multifaceted sonic attack, the group instantly sets themselves apart from their few legitimate contemporaries (as few and far between as they may or may not be) by reminding us all of their well-deserved status as one of the genre’s premier acts.

Continuing with the maddeningly infectious “Hangar 18 & Return To Hangar”, the relentlessly pummeling “Tornado Of Souls”, and the thought-provoking lament “Kick The Chair”, the bloodthirsty combination of legendary vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine, lead guitarist Glen Drover (ex-King Diamond, Eidolon), bassist James “JLo” LoMenzo (White Lion, Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne and David Lee Roth, among others), and drummer Shawn Drover steamroll ahead like the well-oiled machine they have obviously become. Tearing through an impressively varied set that somehow manages to accentuate each of the group’s sonically distinct eras without overly focusing on a particular release, the newly rejuvenated quartet deftly delivers each undeniably high octane track with a near lethal precision.

With the Drover brothers and LoMenzo effectively breathing fire into both newer and established material alike (most notably “In My Darkest Hour”), other standouts, including the painfully relevant “Symphony Of Destruction”, the searing “Peace Sells”, and the equally impressive closer “Holy Wars”, only further solidify the Thrash pioneer’s reputation as a creative and commercial force not to be ignored. Directed and co-produced by a seemingly unlikely--albeit highly effective--combination of Michael Sarna (Anthrax, Orgy and Smashmouth, to name only a few) and Shalini Waran (Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Home The Horror Story), the duo wisely captured the group at their occasionally frantic, fist-pumping, mosh-inducing finest, resulting in an eye-pleasing collection presumably guaranteed to satisfy all parties involved.

So what’s wrong? Nothing, really. Undoubtedly one of the group’s most coherent and effective video efforts to date, even the most jaded and unimaginative of listeners will, without a doubt, ultimately find themselves deeply enthralled with the all-consuming blast of ‘…Heavy Metal thunder…’ that is the mighty That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires. In fact, if the majority--if not all--of the decidedly ferocious wares contained herein are any indication of what the group’s forthcoming eleventh studio effort United Abominations will have to offer, we’re all about to get our freakin’ asses kicked. Needless to say, if you’ve once again found yourself in search of a legitimate reason to ‘…throw the horns…’ and bang your head like it’s 1989, then this, my friends, might just be what the doctor ordered. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
